Howdy Sugar Pies! How is your summer going? So far mine has been busy with family events and get-togethers, going to a few of my grandson’s baseball games, a little traveling and enjoying the fun of living in Branson, Missouri!

Recently, my dear, kindred pie-sistah Melissa from down south in Alabama came to my house for pie!  Melissa and I met probably 7 or 8 years ago through our blogs, and then in person a few years back in California. We both have the same heart for all things vintage, home & family, old fashioned values, Jesus and pie! Melissa’s blog was called Huckleberry Prairie and was one of my favorites! She has a gift for writing, decorating, pie making, creating a cozy home for her family and has such an adorable sense of humor that always makes me laugh out loud when I read her texts.

Well, Melissa has been mighty busy the last several years raising her family of two girls and two boys and is married to her wonderful hubby Jon who is a Fighter Pilot…God bless him for serving and protecting our country and Melissa for holding down the fort and keeping the home fires burning!

pie day hooray

Imagine my delight when Melissa told me that she would be traveling through my hometown on her family vacation road trip! I told her she had to stop by for pie! It was so fun having her family in my home. We sat down at my kitchen table and chatted over Strawberry-Rhubarb Pie while the kids colored and played. Her darling children were so well mannered and melted my heart when they would say “Yes Ma’am”. Seriously, with their adorable faces and their sweet southern politeness  it was just the cutest thing in the whole wide world!

I decided to make Strawberry Rhubarb Pie since I recently harvested my first batch of Rhubarb from my garden. Here in the Ozarks rhubarb is one of the only plants that critters won’t touch so I had plenty! After washing, chopping and drying I put the rhubarb in the freezer for when I was ready to make my pie!

Strawberry Rhubarb is one of my favorite pies and this one is so easy to make! The recipe is from the Sweetie-licious Pies Cookbook written by my other pie-sistah, Linda Hundt! Linda owns three pie shops in Michigan and is an award winning pie baker several times over. So if anyone knows pie she does!

If you don’t have this cookbook yet, oh  goodness, don’t miss out on not only the most delicious, mouth watering pie recipes but the cozy and charming stories and pictures of her vintage farmhouse and barn, which she endearingly calls her farmette! Seriously, it’s so heartwarming I want to live in her cookbook!!

Rhubarb Goodness!

Written by Aunt Ruthie on June 27th, 2018

rhubarb goodness 2

Howdy Sugar Pies! How is your summer going so far? Here in the Ozarks we’ve had our share of summer storms roll through which I love! There’s something about hearing the deep rumble of thunder in the distance and seeing the dark billowy clouds forming in the sky that makes me want to sit out on my front porch to watch the show. But when the lightening starts to strike close by that’s when I head inside, turn off my computer and hunker down with my family. Just a few weeks ago the lightening struck near our well. It blew a fuse so we were without water for a bit. Fortunately, I had several gallons of water stored for a situation like this so everything was okay!

As with each summer I like to grow a few things, tomatoes, peppers, basil, parsley, sage, rosemary and rhubarb! I got a bumper crop this year! Thankfully, the critters in these here parts don’t care much for rhubarb like they did my pumpkins. Lol! So I’ve already harvested a bunch! I’ve washed, dried, and chopped the rhubarb in to small pieces and put in the freezer for when I have time to make something yummy with it. Here’s an earlier peek of my rhubarb garden:

My first harvest of the summer! It was ready just in time to make a Strawberry-Rhubarb pie for a special someone that was coming to visit me. I shared on Instagram some short little videos of me making that very pie…enjoy!

I can’t say enough about this wonderful recipe! Super delicious! And I love how the slice stays together and isn’t runny but still juicy and perfectly sweet! You can find it in one of my most favorite cookbooks in the whole, wide world. It’s written by my dear friend and Pie Sistah, Linda Hundt…Sweetie-licious Pies! (This  affiliate link will take you right to it.)

One of the best tips Linda Hundt taught me was to make up your pie crusts in advance, roll it out, put it in a metal pie pan, flute it then pop it in the freezer so it’s ready to go. When it’s pie baking day half the work is already done and baking the frozen pie shell will help keep it’s shape too! Here is my all-butter pie crust recipe and video.
